The Godfather (1972) is an American feature film from 1972 directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film is the first of a series of three and it tells the story of Michael Corleone. The Godfather is based on the book by Mario Puzo. Leading roles are played by Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, James Caan and Diane Keaton . The Godfather is considered one of the best films of all time. The film was a great success. It was nominated for eleven Oscars and won three : the Academy Award for Best Film , Best Actor ( Marlon Brando before ) and Best Screenplay.
